I lived with my sons grandparents for about 6 years in the early 90′s and the grandfather passed away from asbestos cancer in his stomach about 12 years ago. Knowing that our clothes were washed together and being a part of the household, would it be possible? My son brought it up today and now it has concerned me.
A cloud of asbestos dust covered my suit cases, clothes, movies, computers, some books and stuff. Can I wipe the possibly contaminated dust off with a damp rag and avoid inhaling any more of these particles in the future? What’s the best way to clean it off my stuff?
I had to fix some things in my Grandmas house, which was built in 1954. I took out the heater and cut out dry wall to replace some ceiling tiles. When I ripped them out I’m not a hundred percent I didn’t just eat a face full of asbestos insulation and a pretty thick layer of dirt just covered everything in the living room. I’m not sure, but I’d wager there is a good chance the tiles and insulation are made from the cheapest materials available in 1954, which is probably asbestos. I know the outside paneling is made out of asbestos, I did have to drill through it in a couple places, but I held my breath. I may die from mesothilioma, but at least grandma can sell her house.
My job relocated from a clean modern building with great maintenance and security, to a dirty rodent infested building that’s at least 40 years old because it was more cost effective.
The water fountains are turned off because of the lead pipes. There are mouse dropping in my cubicle everyday and the whole office is coated in a strange white powder. The building has repeatedly been sited by the health department but nothing has been done.
OSHA has tested the powder and says its not Legionaries Disease, which one of our other buildings did have, and its not asbestos, even though a contractor left the building and refused to complete repairs on our AC claiming the building had asbestos. They says it has a high mold content but that’s not something they deal with.
A lot of people in the building have a persistent cough and my desk is right under a vent so I not only have a cough but have horrible headaches as well.
I currently have to wipe my desk off with bleach wipes everyday just to keep the dust off my clothes. The dust is so thick when I come to work on Mondays that you can write in it. Plus its not like regular dust as its grainy. I really think this stuff is dangerous but I can’t afford to quit and look for a new job.
What can I do to find out what this stuff is? And how can I protect myself?
Ok, so earlier today I went into an abandoned building on a whim. I was in there for maybe 45 to 90 minutes, just walking around and taking pictures. Well, after climbing up three floors I reach a hallway with a sign saying something to the effect of "Warning: Biohazard. Blue asbestos levels in this area have been found to be over 10x the harmless daily amount. It is present as a blue dust cloud when disturbed. If inhaled seek medical attention immediately". So naturally I got the hell out of dodge when I read that, got home, took a long shower, and put my clothes in the wash.
So right now I’m kind of freaking out and wondering if I’m doomed or not. I didn’t see any blue clouds or anything while I was in there, I wasn’t disturbing anything aside from walking around, and I was in there for only 45-90 minutes. But with levels "over 10x" the daily safe dose I’m worried that that’s enough to negate all of that.
Should I see a doctor? Would there even be a point? (after all, the effects don’t show up for 15-40 years and there’s no way to get it out of your lungs) Should I even be worried?
I live in an older rental home which has popcorn ceilings in all the rooms, and recently I had a certified asbestos technician come and take a sample of the popcorn ceiling to test if it contains asbestos, I’m still waiting for the results. Now, my little boy has scraped some of it onto the bunk bed and surrounding area, I am very worried if it does contain asbestos, how do I clean the room and the clothes around that area? I immediately removed my kids from that room.
Please advice me with sincere answers.
Worried mom~!
I had an asbestos scare a year ago and recently found a new job, well my boss cut up a fire door. I have learned alot about asbestos in the last year and was a good distance away while the cutting was going on with a circular saw. I had no idea it was a fire door until I saw the dust under the door and the gray sheet between the wood laminate. Anyhow after what I have already been through i am freaking out again I was told to pick up one of the pieces of the door and throw away and I did so my exposure was minimal but with this being amosite asbestos I am really freaking out I came home threw away my clothes and shoes i had on that day and vaccumed my car but I cant keep from thinking I brought home dust to my kids and wife.
If there are any Doctors on here that can offer up any advice I would appreciate it. Also is this a legal matter because I am not sure I can bring myself to return to this job and have to use he contaminated tools .
I unfortunately was not wearing a mask , because it was unknown the door was a fire door until cut .We were however outdoors.
