Asbestos in my house… HELP!?
I just read an article on asbestos and did some research on it… I then looked right beside me and I have a fireplace with a fluffy, wooly material that surrounds it.
I found a picture that looks VERY similar to what I have and it is definetly asbestos

My house is over 35 years old and I have been living here for 10 years and spending A LOT of time in this room
I understand that asbestos is only spread if disturbed… there is a window right beside my fireplace and im pretty sure the wind is likely spreading fibres around
I do not have any respitory problems but it is said to take 10 – 40 years to develop
I am nervous now.. how do I get rid of this stuff without disturbing it… and what if there is more?
what should i do?

look up and call an insulation expert in the phonebook and have him take a look at it and see whether or not it is asbestos. if its not, you have nothing to worry about. In all likelihood its NOT asbestos, as it was well known that asbestos was bad by the 1950s

If you wan’t to get rid of the asbestos you need to get a GOOD respirator and rip all the asbestos off, clean the surface and throw it away in a plastic bag. If you don’t want to do that you’ll have to call hazmat, get kicked out of your house for a while and have them do it. You can only get cancer from inhaling or swallowing asbestos particles.

Call an asbestos specialist in. Do nothing yourself and don’t touch it.
It’s probably not asbestos, but you don’t want to spend time worrying. It might be just glass fiber that’s a bit dirty.
Don’t worry though too much. Even in worst case scenario, you’re very, very unlikely to get asbestosis.
