At least 90% of mesotheliomas can be linked to exposure to asbestos, although usually the exposure will have taken place many years before the cancer becomes apparent. It is known that even very low levels of exposure to asbestos can lead to the development of mesothelioma

The biggest risk factor known for mesothelioma is asbestos exposure . . however, mesothelioma can occur even without that exposure . . for unknown reasons. For the overwhelming majority of cancer the ’cause’ is relatively unknown. No one knows why one person will get cancer while someone else will not . . in other words not everyone exposed to asbestos goes on to get mesothelioma . . so the question is . . . why.
You can find out accurate information about the three different types of mesothelioma from the American Society of Clinical Oncologists (ASCO). NCI also provides solid info about the disease. Most other websites for this disease are based on exploiting the disease for personal gain and do not provide good info.
